Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

For variety’s sake, I’ve treated a series of books as one book.

In no particular order, then:

The Belgariad - David Eddings (5 books)

Legend - David Gemmell

The Fionavar Tapestry - Guy Gavriel Kay (3 books)

Mort - Terry Pratchett

Morningstar - David Gemmell

The History of the Runestaff - Michael Moorcock (4 books)

His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman (3 books)

Magician - Raymond E. Feist

The Eyes of the Dragon - Stephen King

The Elenium - David Eddings ( 3 books)

Twitter

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

I’m trying to come to terms with Twitter… Raising my cyber profile and all that. But I never have the time to read about how to maximise the benefits of Twitter. How do you get followers, for example? And does having followers give you a Jesus complex? Perhaps I’ll end up in my very own town in Siberia, surrounded by adoring disciples.

Or perhaps not.

The whole Twitter business is sort of addictive, though. Martin Bee, for example, who I knew in Cairo in 2001, is now a DJ in Amman. He posts regular updates on Facebook that are pretty close to Tweet sizes. They’re often very entertaining and give an idea of ex-pat life in the Middle East.

But other Facebook comments and Tweets I’ve read can be bizarrely, inconsequentially, personal that probably shouldn’t be aired outside the author’s own head.

Nevertheless I will no doubt soon be posting a clever link up from this blog to my Twitter page - when I can find time to read about how to set it up.

Too macho?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I’m reading the steel remains by Richard Morgan… 200 pages in and although i’m very much enjoying it, I can’t help thinking he’s maybe overplayed the violence side of it all. Because it really is … Detailed… Gritty… Disturbing… Lots of intestine spilling, Impalements and the like, all described in lingering detail.

The tale of the birds is violent, but I glossed over some of what could have been the worst parts. Perhaps not great in terms of realism, but I’m not sure how much delight typical fantasy readers take in magnified close up descriptions of murder and mutilation. Certainly, the very grittiness of the ten thousand by Paul Kearney slightly put me off.

Possibly there’s a place for a bit of sleight of hand when writing violence, maybe even telling not showing, or even just hinting.

Mind you, like I said, I am enjoying the steel remains. But it is very violent.

Massacres

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The book I’m currently writing is going well. Real life keeps intruding, of course, in various ways, but all in all I’m fairly pleased with it. It’s still early days, of course, and I really wish I was better at thinking up titles, but it’s getting there. I’m pretty much entering the middle phase of the first draft now. 230 A5 pages written. I wish I had the maths skills to work out how many Microsoft Word pages that translates to.

My cousin commented on how violent The Tale of the Birds is. This one isn’t bloody like that, but lots of dark themes are cropping up…neglect, single parents, obsessive behaviour, drug abuse and the like. It’s certainly making it interesting to write, but it’s not exactly the light, frothy children’s book I was expecting it to be. Still, at least I’ve managed to resist the urge to include any massacres. So far, at least.

The other thing this book is doing is getting me back into writing after a fairly long break. I made a start oon the sequel to The Tale of the Birds a while back, but it came to nought. The other day, though, while writing a scene for the children’s (?) book, the entire prologue for The Tale of the Bird’s sequel flashed before my eyes. It’s perfect, because it explains just about everything that needs to be explained from The Tale of the Birds in an active, progressive manner. And you know what? There isn’t even a massacre in that scene, either. Yet.
